  • A 1962 COMPANY

    A 1962 COMPANY

Founded in 1962 as an air charter and telecommunications business. Wilken became the first company to operate international passenger scheduled flights in Kenya. In the 1970’s the then shareholders, Mr. Bruce McKenzie, a prominent figure in the Government of Kenya, and Mr. Keith Savage, divided the company into two, Wilken Air and Wilken Telecommunications. They sold Wilken Air to Cooper Motors, who later on in 2012 sold it to DAC Aviation, and retained Wilken Telecommunications, which operated as a licensed supplier of telecommunications equipment. Wilken thrived in a sector monopolized by the then Kenya Post and Telecommunications Limited (KP&T) setting up the first satellite earth station in Kenya and rose to be the supplier of choice for telecommunications equipment in the sector.

    A Regional African Telecommunications Company

In the 1990s Wilken looked to build up a strategic position in the vital areas of Telecommunications, Satellite, and Internet Services. This included removing the risk of operating in one country, Kenya thus expanding into Tanzania and Uganda by strategically investing in telecom licenses to become a VSAT and Internet service provider. Kenya and the East African region at large have achieved significant growth since 2001, which has led to a positive effect on Wilken. The company has continued to affirm its position in the East African market by expanding its market awareness, service offerings and strengthening its internal structures and business processes.
